Fork option is used to get someone else's project on your profile, but having that same functionality on your own project page does nothing but creates the same copy of the project the user already has. This creates multiple copies of the same project for a single user. The Fork button should be made hidden if the owner Id of the project is the same as the current user Id. This can be easily done by adding a conditional statement in the template file.
