Research information for an open MusicBrainz instrument addition request

In MusicBrainz, Instruments are entities just like Artists, Works, Labels and Places; and can be linked to each other and to external sites (usually Wikidata).

To facilitate the addition of more Instruments, we use a ticket tracker.

For this task, pick an open INST ticket (only from this list!) and research as much as possible about it.

Good information is:

  • What it looks like. (Links to sites with reference pictures, sites that sell the instrument, etc.)
  • Where it came from. (Country or area.)
  • Usage and historical data. (Was it used traditionally? As a shaman-tool? As a toy?)
  • How old it is. (The Renaissance? The Middle Ages? Even older? Is it a modern invention?)
  • Who (if known) invented it, and when.
  • Links to Wikidata and other databases.
  • How it relates to instruments already in MusicBrainz. (Is it a hybrid of trumpet and ocarina? A forerunner to the kazoo?) Provide links to instruments.
  • Be as concise as possible, lists are a good thing!

Note: All information must have sources provided!

Example of a well sourced INST ticket/comment: INST-484 - clavioline.

Add this information in a structured way as a comment on the ticket (don't edit it!) (for this you will need a ticket tracker account). Provide the INST ticket link and sources.

For more info on what is and is not good to add as instruments, see our instrument guide. If while researching you find out that the instrument might not match our requirements, make sure to mention that (and the reasons why) in the ticket comments!
