Some characters shouldn't be used in usernames since they are not properly handled by @-mentions and can potentially cause other discrepancies and unwanted behaviors.

An initial pull request for this task already exists. Rebase it in a new feature branch, review the changes and improve the feature, taking into account any comments on the original PR.

Create a new pull request in the zulip/zulip repository with the improved feature.
