Write simple format conversion tools between the most common subtitle formats. Keep in mind that this is simpler than it seems, because there's plenty of libraries to build from (by the way, please use them - one of the good things of open source is that almost everything you want to do has been 95% done by someone else and we can blatantly use the work from others with no shame). You can use any language you feel comfortable with.
